Attic fans are designed to manage heat and moisture by creating a continuous cycle of airflow. Incoming air from the soffits travels along the underside of the roof deck toward the fan, effectively "sweeping" heat and moisture away from the insulation and structural lumber. This helps prevent heat from radiating into the living spaces below and reduces moisture and indoor humidity.

For optimal performance, attic fans typically aim for at least six air exchanges per hour by pulling ambient air through gable or soffit vents. Solar attic fans exhaust heat and moisture out of the attic, reducing temperatures by as much as 50°F. Most manufacturers include a temperature setting that activates the fan at around 85°F and turns it off between 62–70°F, depending on the model.

Avoid Heat Related Damage

  • Shingle Deterioration: Excessive attic heat (which can reach over 150°F) radiates through the roof, causing asphalt shingles to become brittle, curl at the edges, and age prematurely.
  • Decking and Sheathing Warping: High temperatures can cause the wood sheathing (decking) beneath shingles to warp or buckle, compromising the roof's structural stability.
  • Radiant Heat Transfer: By lowering attic temperatures by up to 50°F, solar fans reduce the "heat mass" that otherwise forces shingles to retain damaging levels of thermal energy.

Structural Impacts of Heat, Moisture and Humidity

  • Condensation and Wood Rot: Fans expel warm, moist air that rises from living spaces. Without this, moisture can condense on cold wooden beams and rafters, leading to "fungal decay" and structural wood rot.
  • Mold and Mildew Growth: Stagnant, humid air is a breeding ground for mold. Active ventilation dries the attic environment, protecting both the roof structure and the home's air quality.
  • Rusting of Metal Components: Reducing humidity prevents metal fasteners, nails, and other hardware in the attic from rusting and losing their grip over time.
  • Humidity: Proper attic ventilation lowers indoor humidity and enhances overall comfort. Installing a stairway attic insulator minimizes heat transfer, preventing outdoor heat from entering and conditioned air from escaping. Stabilizing indoor temperatures by sealing off the primary path where heat enters and expensive A/C escapes results in less humidity, better home comfort, reduced A/C usage and overall energy savings.

Maximize Efficiency: Solar Attic Fan + Stairway Attic Insulator

Enhance your home's comfort by combining attic ventilation (solar attic fan) with an attic stairway insulator. While ventilation reduces indoor humidity, the insulator acts as a thermal barrier—preventing summer heat from entering and conditioned air from escaping. This dual approach stabilizes indoor temperatures and maximizes energy savings.
